Corruption and privatization: Evidence from a natural experiment in China

چکیده
This paper investigates how government corruption shapes state-owned enterprises' (SOEs) privatization. To establish causality, we exploit a natural experiment (i.e., the investigations of Central Commission for Discipline Inspection) to document that SOEs significantly deepen privatization after crackdown on corruption. Further evidence demonstrates two plausible mechanisms driving our findings. Specifically, anti-corruption campaign: 1) accelerates process by curbing underpricing transfers state entities and encouraging normal private or individuals; 2) reducing managers' incentives maintain dominance ownership expropriation through discretion perk consumption. Moreover, findings are particularly pronounced located in areas with high levels social trust, intervention, less information asymmetry.

Corruption and Resource Allocation: Evidence from China
Exploiting a unique data set containing transactions data from a panel of 769 Chinese stateowned enterprises between 1980 and 1989, this paper tests microeconomic implications of a pervasive form of corruption—official diversion of under-priced, in-plan goods to the market. Corruption has the predicted effects on resource allocation. Official under-pricing of in-plan goods, which lowers the mar...
متن کاملCorruption and Social Interaction: Evidence from China
We explore theoretically and empirically whether social interaction, including local and global interaction, influences the incidence of corruption. We first present an interaction-based model on corruption that predicts that the level of corruption is positively associated with social interaction. Then we empirically verify the theoretical prediction using within-country evidence at the provin...
متن کاملUltimate Privatization and Change in Firm Performance: Evidence from China
We extend the current empirical literature on privatization by exploring the effect of ultimate privatization on the performance of Chinese listed companies. Ultimate privatization is defined as the incidence of transferring the ultimate control of a state-owned company from the government to private owners. Using a sample of 127 Chinese listed companies that have had controlling blocks transfe...
متن کاملThe Causes of Corruption: Evidence from China
In this study we explore in detail the causes of corruption in China using two different sets of data at the regional level (provinces and cities). We observe that regions with more anti-corruption efforts, histories of British rule, higher openness, more access to media and relatively higher wages of government employees are markedly less corrupt; while social heterogeneity, regulation, abunda...
متن کاملMagnet Schools and Student Achievement: Evidence from a Randomized Natural Experiment in China∗
This paper examines the impact of attending a magnet school on student achievement using school admissions lotteries in China. Although lottery winners were more likely to attend magnet schools that appear better in many dimensions, including peer achievement, we find little evidence that winning a lottery improved students’performance on the High School Entrance Exam or their enrollment status...
